GREAT WAGON ROAD:
Philadelphia, PA to Harpers Ferry, VA As
the first route opened by English colonists across the Appalachian barrier,
The Wilderness Road was greatly significant to the westward expansion.
Travel from Philadelphia,
Valley Forge and Gettysburg - significant areas of military and social history -
across the Potomac to Harpers Ferry, site of John Browns controversial stand
against slavery.
WILDERNESS ROAD: Shenandoah Valley, VA
to Louisville,
KY This route parallels Highway 85 passing
through Virginia's Shenandoah Valley into eastern Tennessee, and turning north
across Cumberland Gap into rugged eastern Kentucky, the trail ends in
Louisville. Its origins were two ancient routes known as The Warriors'
Path and the Great Indian Warpath. Potomac through Virginias Shenendoah Valley, turning into
the Cumberland Gap and stopping in Kentucky by the Falls of the Ohio.
At stops along the way we
investigate folk art and culture of eastern Tennessee and Kentucky before we end
up in Louisville and the Kentucky Derby's horse
scene.
